“Descriptive writing is an art form. It’s painting a word picture so that the reader ‘sees’ exactly what you are describing.”

~Brenda Covert

We can describe a person, a place, an object or an experience (event).

Descriptive writing creates a clear image in the reader’s head. That’s why we should teach our students this short statement: SHOW, DON’T TELL!.

Ask them to describe something or someone in a way that makes it come alive for the reader. Therefore, it’s important to incorporate all of the senses: taste, touch, sight, smell and sound.

You can use this worksheet:

Describing an Event

Describing a Person

Describing an Object
